I'm in a communication workshop designed to help us become more influential and compelling communicators. The instructor recommended a book that I'm now recommending to you :-)The Human Element: Overcoming the Resistance That Awaits New Ideas is sure to become a classic. It explains the "four frictions" that operate against every innovative idea, product, or service, and how to overcome them.As soon as you start reading it, you'll be nodding...
I'm about 3 chapters in to the book Candidate Experience: How to improve talent acquisition to drive business performance. It's by Kevin Grossman (who I reported to when I freelanced for an agency he helped manage). Kevin is the president of The Talent Board. That's an organization that surveys Candidate Experience (CE), studies best practices, and helps employers to improve from applicant attraction through to onboarding of new hires. It's a...
It began with Netflix
I have recently read No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention by none other than Reed Hastings. If you have read this, you would have learned about the seemingly ruthless “Keeper Test.” If you don’t know it, here’s the gist of it:
If an employee told you they were leaving for a similar job at a competitor, would you fight hard to keep them? That’s the question. If you sense you would accept that...

I just finished reading Zig Ziglar's Secrets of Closing the Sale: For Anyone Who Must Get Others to Say Yes! and absolutely fell in love with the Price vs cost discussion (and honestly this book as a whole).
What's the difference between price and cost?
Price is a one-time agreement, right at the initial purchasing decision. The cost is the long-term quality for the entirety of the agreement, including upgrades, repairs, improvements, etc.
Zig...

We are in the process of hiring a content manager (early stages.) One thing I want to make clear is that reading books is an important part of the job. If you were to put together a list of books that would help a content manager thrive in the first year, what would they be? Maybe one book a month. So, give me your top 12.1. They Ask, You Answer (Obviously.)
There's a stat inThey Ask, You Answerabout how many times a prospect visits your site, how many pages they review, or minutes spent researching youbeforethey first talk to you. Does anyone remember what that figure is? I've been scanning for a while and can't seem to find it.
Straight away, taking away a bunch from the first chapter:
- Quote from Doug Harrison: "If you can't afford the people to run the business for you, then all you have is a job, not a business."
- Delegate efficiently and to the right people so the job gets done right. Proper delegation isn't "get it off your plate", it's "put it on the right plate." (I tried with this analogy haha)
- Educate your staff to understand the basics of running and...

I just finished reading this book the other day and honestly, it's changed the way I approach thinking about how my work and personal lives intertwine. The book challenges the idea of needing to have balance and replaces that notion with finding satisfaction and prioritizing what makes your life satisfied. For example, my prioritization for satisfaction could be:
- Family
- Work/Career
- Health
- Social
- Education
If I take the time to meet each of...

I was introduced to this book by David Meerman Scott and the cover and title alone caught my attention almost immediately.
From what I've gathered in reading DMS's post on LinkedIn as well as the brief research I did on the title, it seems to go much further than what the platform is looking to do. Instead, it's from the accounts of members of the Facebook team on how the company stays ahead of governments, politicians, and businesses to...

I'm someone who loves to read business, leadership, marketing, and overall Professional books 24/7 however I've been challenging myself to read other books recently to try to balance things out and not burn myself out on professional reads.
The two books that I've been really enjoying are Billy Martin: Baseball's Flawed Genius & The Bomber Mafia.
So I'm curious, what books have you been reading that are moreFunreads vs. Professional? How...

I've been on a bit of a reading binge and wanted to share some books that I've been reading in May. Yes, by binge, I mean borderline craziness!
What books have you been reading this month? Any recommendations we need to pick up? Let's hear it!

I recently finished reading Oren Klaff's book Flip the Script and it's been on my mind for days as I tried to separate the useful bits of strategy from the stories and examples that made my blood boil. (His other book, Pitch Anything, is still on my list...)Which got me wondering a few things...1. Have you read this book? Did you feel the same way? Is it just me?2. What's the worst business book you've ever read and why? How about the...
I'm hearing a lot about this book since its release earlier this week as it's seen as the sequel to Radical Candor.
Who has picked it up already? Has anyone finished it already?
Let's get the discussion started.
Also, if you are curious, here's a link to pick it up for yourself! Allison Melnik and Stephanie Baiocchi I know you both have been on the Just Work train since it first left the station. Would love your thoughts so far!

Time to check in and see what books you have been adding to your bookshelf lately! For me, it's been The Forever Transaction by Robbie Kellman Baxter and The Visual Sale by Marcus Sheridan and Tyler Lessard (good refresher.
How about you?
How about you?
I just picked back up "The Power of Moments" and have StoryBrand coming in the mail. What titles are you reading these days?
I hear a lot of people talking about StoryBrand throughout IMPACT these days and while I haven't yet read it myself, I was curious if this was a title a lot of people have read and implemented?Share your thoughts below and if it seems worthwhile, I'm gonna add it to my bookshelf ASAP!
At IMPACT, I help facilitate different book-focused discussions. However, I don't always feel like I know all the best practices for doing so.If you have run a book club or book discussion before, what would you recommend or what have you seen work really well?
Many of us have read lots of books throughout our careers, but I'm sure we all have that one book we always think of and recommend. What's that book for you?
